How custody works

Relay is operator-controlled custody with an account kept for each recipient. This page explains what that means, what it protects against, and what it cannot.

Who holds the money

Tokens route their creator fees to collection addresses that Relay controls. When fees are collected and final on chain, Relay credits them to the recipient’s account in its ledger. Recipients do not hold keys; Relay operates the wallets and sends claims to recipients’ banks.

This is not a trustless protocol. You rely on Relay to keep collected fees safe and to pay claims. In exchange, recipients need no crypto wallet and can be paid in US dollars.

What is checked

  • A token is listed only after its fee routing to a Relay collection address is verified on chain, and the routing is checked again over time.
  • Fees count as collected only once they are final on chain. Fees still in a launchpad’s vault are shown as uncollected and are not part of anyone’s balance.
  • SOL, ETH and settled US dollars are kept as separate balances. USD figures for crypto are estimates and are labeled that way.

What it protects against

  • Someone posing as you. Earnings are tied to your X account’s permanent id, not its handle. A person who takes over a handle you gave up does not get your earnings.
  • Swapped records. Bank details are encrypted and kept as versioned records. Each claim is tied to the exact bank details you approved with your passkey, so a changed record cannot be slipped into a claim.
  • Paying twice. A claim reserves its amount before anything moves and carries a one-time key, so the same request cannot be paid out twice.
  • A stolen sign-in. Someone with only your X session can see your earnings. Once you have added a passkey, they cannot add bank details or claim without it.

What it cannot make harmless

  • Your X account and your passkey, both compromised. Someone holding both can act as you.
  • A compromised Relay signing environment. Because Relay holds the keys to custody wallets, an attacker inside its own signing systems could move funds held there.

Claims and costs

  • Before you confirm a claim you see the exact amount taken from your balance, each network, conversion and provider cost, the expected US dollar amount and the minimum under that quote.
  • Relay takes no platform deduction from claims today (0%).
  • A transfer submitted to your bank is shown as submitted. A claim is marked paid only after the bank confirms it.
  • Some transfers are sent by Relay operations through the payout provider. When that happens, the claim says so.
  • The payout provider may ask you for additional information before it pays.

Being named on a token

Anyone can launch a token that names an X account. Being named does not mean that person created, endorses or promotes the token. Relay routes the token’s creator fees to them and shows this on every token page.
